Unqualified and Inappropriate
Faculty
UOP claims to have "strict" qualifications for faculty, but what we have
found indicates to us that UOP has a different definition for "strict." See for
yourself below. From our observations, we can only conclude that a) UOP has
really low standards or b) UOP does not even conduct a basic background check on
its faculty! A simple Google search or background check would have revealed this
information to UOP, yet they didn't care enough about their students to take
this simple, easy precautionary measure. Either that or
they did, and decided that they would still make for quality faculty. Would you
hire them at your college? What possible excuse can any school have for hiring
staff like this? The answer is, they just don't care. Judge for yourself:
FACILITATOR #1: Joseph Kleinplatz, M.D.
UOP's website
lists Joseph Kleinplatz, MD as faculty at
its Jersey City campus (as of 5-14-07). A quick Internet search on the name
reveals that this facilitator has been charged with:
A) Fraudulently obtaining a medical license
B) Fraudulent practice of medicine
C) False report
D) Moral unfitness / incompetence
E) Violation of public health law
F) Failing to make records available
He was found by the board to be a menace to New York and his license was
revoked.
The report by the State of New York Department of Health is found here.
This grifter also made the
news in Illinois. This article
explains that Kleinplatz never graduated from medical school and faked his
diploma and transcripts. His license was also revoked by the state of Illinois
in 2001.
FACILITATOR #2: James Brey
According to the Arizona Republic, James
Brey was hired by the University of Phoenix
to facilitate an Ethics course. Who better to teach Ethics than a person who has
demonstrated that they have none?

Ex-con Teaches Justice Ethics
UPDATE
10/18/07: Noon
University of Phoenix Prof. James Brey was placed on paid administrative leave
today while officials investigate his criminal past.
An Arizona Republic investigation today revealed that Brey, who teaches an
online criminal justice ethics class, was convicted in 2002 of fraud and theft
at Florida State University.
A student posted a complaint about the conviction on a class bulletin board.
"As of 9 a.m. this morning...the faculty member has been placed on paid leave
while we further investigate the situation," University spokeswoman Ayla Dickey
said.
10/18/07: 8 a.m.
A criminal justice and ethics professor working for the University of Phoenix
has an interesting background: He's a convicted criminal.
James Brey pleaded guilty in 2002 to charges of thefts and fraud at Florida
State University after taking money from the college debate team and submitting
phony travel reimbursements.
Court records show Brey, who was director of the debate team, was originally
charged with six counts of grand theft, 22 counts of forgery and 22 counts of
presenting fraudulent receipts. He was later convicted on four felony counts and
ordered to repay $34,000.
The irony of the situation has not been lost on one of Brey's students, who
this week posted a message on a class Web site saying she could no longer take
justice lessons from a convict.
“The inconsistency of an ethics professor in criminal justice with a criminal
background is a bit much,” says Lori Chalker, 35, of Hawaii. “This really
bothers me.”
Chalker, who is enrolled in the university's online associate degree program,
says when she complained to college officials they simply offered to transfer
her out of Brey's class.
“The college wouldn't discuss it with me,” she says.
But on Wednesday, University of Phoenix officials said they would launch an
immediate investigation.
“The University takes situations such as this extremely seriously, and is
initiating an immediate investigation into the matter,” spokeswoman Ayla Dickey
said. “We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our academic environment
and responsiveness to our student population.”
The university, headquartered in Phoenix, is the largest private university in
North America and one of the world's largest online educators. Dickey said every
faculty application asks applicants if they have been convicted of a felony. A
conviction doesn't necessarily mean you won't get the job.
Contacted at his home in Florida, Brey, 48, said college officials didn't raise
any questions about his criminal record when he was hired a little more than a
year ago.
“I was never asked,” he says.
But Brey would not discuss the student complaint or his conviction. He referred
all questions to the university.
He also hasn't been exactly forthcoming with students.
A biography Brey sent to students in his ethics class includes details about
where he grew up, his employment, his home life, his travels and his reading
habits. He notes that he has a doctorate and recently graduated from law school.
“Most of my adult life had been spent as a professor at FSU,” Brey writes in the
bio.
He does not, however, mention why he left Florida State or that he filed
bankruptcy three years ago.
He also does not mention his criminal record.
FACILITATOR #3: Roger D. Moore

ARE THESE THE KINDS OF FACILITATORS YOU WANT
FACILITATING YOUR CLASS? DOES THIS SOUND
LIKE A SCHOOL CONCERNED ABOUT TEACHING EXCELLENCE?
